Remembering Anne Boleyn

Music Box

I wanted to share with you the winner of our Remembering Anne competition. You may recall that I asked readers to celebrate and commemorate Anne’s life by remembering her in a creative and original way.

I was moved by the entries I received and will share some of them with you over the next few days but today I would like to congratulate our winner, Michael Glaeser for his moving and original tribute – a music box.

One of Michael’s hobbies is building music boxes so he thought it would be the perfect way to couple his love for Tudor history with one of his other pastimes.

Anne Boleyn Music Box

The details in Michael’s own words are as follows:

– The musical movement is a japanese built piece which plays “Greensleeves”.

Greensleeves appeared in the Elizabethan era and is most likely from Italy…however, it is commonly associated with Henry VIII as a ballad for Anne. I thought I would play on this…

– Once I received the movement, I designed the box itself to include a raised floor so the turn key remains hidden. The inside of the lid is set back a bit to incorporate an art piece that I designed to fit the music. I then stained this in an english red mahogany.

– I created a “pillow” of crushed green velvet and replicated Anne’s iconic necklace. I cannot take credit for the “B” brooch which I bought but I did create the pearl necklace piece and set it into the box. I plan on adding two small framed miniature portraits of Henry and Anne in the future.

I think you will all agree with me when I say that this is a lovely gesture and such an original way of remembering Anne Boleyn.

Here is a video that Michael made showing the movement of the box. Again congratulations!

And I have to add that I love Michael’s ‘Team Boleyn’ shirt!

Great job!! My Inlaws gave me a English cottage music box, that plays Greensleves, but the music is worn out now. it is about 40 years old, and I display it every Christmas time.I would like to know where I can purchase a new one, with this so worn out? It does not have to be a English cottage, but just love the music of Greensleves.
