We are giving away five autographed copies of Thomas Penn’s Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England to celebrate the release of the paperback on March 1, 2012.
Here is a little something to whet your appetite:
It is 1501. Henry VII – a fugitive with Machiavellian charm – has won the throne of
England through luck, guile and ruthlessness. But for many he remains a usurper.
Now, his elder son is to marry a great Spanish princess in a wedding upon which the
fate of the country will hang…
Winter King vividly recreates the dark and dangerous birth of the Tudor dynasty, as
England was ravaged by fear, conspiracies, corruption and treachery, and one man
clung to his kingdom at any cost.
‘Compelling….fascinating’ Hilary Mantel

Looks like an amazing book on an often overlooked founder of the Tudor dynasty. He is the start, yet is often ignored in favour of the infamous Henry or glorious Elizabeth. Nice to see a book about him!
after reading this i really want to read more. I have always loved the tudor’s era. My only problem is that a lot of the books aren’t available to me here in canada..I am still trying to get Anne Boleyn – herry’s absession by elizabeth Norton.
many thanks to all of you writers who try to keep the tudor era alive..

I would LOVE to win a copy of Winter King because I am well familiar with the reign of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, but I do not know very much about Henry’s forebears and their lives. Also, I collect autographed copies of the books that interest me, so this would add to that collection as well as my Tudor England collection. Thank you!
I have read so many books about the Tudors from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I, it will be refreshing to read a book about Henry VII.
Oh, that really sounds fascinating! I just love good Tudor books. I really would like to own one.
Looks wonderful !!!
It is a book on my wish list, I know a lot of Tudor history during Henry VIII’s reign but I don’t know a lot about his father and would be glad to read this book to know more. I’m always eager to know more and read when it’s about the Tudor dynasty. You would make me the Most Happy.
I know very little about any Tutor history before the coronation of Henry VIII. I’d love to know about his father, mother and brother.
I’ve read so many fabulous reviews of this book, I’d love to win a copy!
I believe this part of history is the most amazing. too many people overlook it as a greedy selfish king. But in reality he may have been this a little but this king changed the face of religion and history .
Just the book I have been waiting for. I love that time period and always find Henry VII very interesting. I believe that there is a lot we still don’t know about him.
I have long wished for such a book that would shed more light on Henry VII and this period of Tudor history. I so look forward to reading it.
Just subscribed, looks like a fascinating book, would love to read it!
Now you’ve got me rereading Shadow of the Tower
Many thanks
I’d love to win this book because there are few things that I look forward to more than curling up with a good Tudor-related book. They take me away from the present and into a time that I feel an unexplainable connection to. I would love to read this book in particular because I have not yet read one that focuses on the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. I am always excited to learn new details when it comes to a subject that I find so fascinating.
After having just read Philippa Gregory’s The White Queen and The Red Queen, I’m thirsty for more and this is the perfect follow-up read! Excited!
It looks interesting, and I do not yet have a copy! I am trying to read as many Tudor books as I can this year, while setting an example for my kids 🙂 You can never have enough books about them.
I’m looking forward to reading this.
I love the mysteries and darkness surrounding the Tudor court! I often feel that Henry VII is forgotten because of his 2nd sons crazy antics as king. Looks absolutely fascinating!
I would love to read this book to add to my Tudor book collection, I’ve already tried to win in two other times on Goodreads, but sadly I didn’t win!

My love affair with all things Tudor started when I took a college course on British history because my older brother had taken the same class the year before and I could save a little money by using his book. The book was Fraser’s Mary, Queen of Scots and after the first chapter I was hooked. Over many years I managed to acquire a fairly decent library of books on the Scots Queen and the Tudors. Unfortunately, during the time my exhusband and I were packing up our house to sell it because we were divorcing, he threw out a number of boxes that contained the majority of my library “thinking they were trash”. Whether on purpose or not, they now are rotting in some landfill and have been for 20 years. Because of health issues I had to retire at a rather young age of 55 and on a fixed income have never been able to recreate my beloved library. My books ranged from well researched histories to fictional accounts of what might have happened and even some that critics distained. Frazer’s book survived because I just happened to be rereading it at the time. I would love to add another book to my small collection in hopes over the next few years, I can replace some of my old favorties and find new ones. Of course, I know there are others who love Tudor history as much as I do and if you should have a request from a child, I would hope that child would receive the book as I believe children should be encouraged in their passions – it is how we generate new historians.
I’d love to win a copy of this book. There isn’t nearly enough written about Henry VII, which is a shame, as he was a pivotal player at a very key time of English history. Also, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard him described before as having “Machiavellian charm.” Intriguing….
This sounds wonderful, and the chance to win an autographed copy is even better! Thanks!
I would love to learn more about Henry VII. His mother was so young when he was born and having spent so much of his life in exile of course I’m fascinated by him. Thanks for the chance to win!
A book I’d love to read, haven’t read much about Henry VII.
Henry VII is one of the Tudor’s that really interests me. After learning a little about him by taking a class on Henry VIII I have been wanting to learn more Henry VII
I have always been fascinated by Henry viii and especially Anne Boleyn and Catherine parr however recently watched the whole of the shadow of the tower and would love to know more about Henry vii. I know it’s fiction however when I read fiction I end up researching the facts so would love a copy of this book x
This book would be a great addition to my growing collection! I love tudor history and and can’t seem to get enough of it.
Hmmm…wonder if Richard III will make an appearance. Look forward to the Welsh episodes.
I love to settle in for a good read about this time period. This book looks great. I’m very interested in Henry VII and his oldest son, whom you don’t often find much information about. I’m also interested in the early days of Henry VIII’s reign. Even if I don’t win I’ll get this book, so thanks for the recommendation!
It would be great to have this in my library.
What a great source to transport me back to a fantastic time in history!! I can’t wait to read it!
I love (am obsessed) with all things Tudor!! I would love a copy of this book for my Tudor library. Without even reading one page, I know I will love it just because of the beautiful cover!!
I’m an early modern scholar. Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England looks like a great read!
We need to more about the beginnings of The Tudor Dynasty.
Sounds interesting, and I enjoy reading anything about the Tudors. Thnx 4 the chance!!!
I am sooooo in love with all things to do with the Tudor period! I would love to have this to study and read!
Looks like a fantastic book to add to my lovely collection and more reading for my ever growing passion for learning about the Tudor dynasty! 🙂
Please enter me, much love, Claire x
What a great prize 🙂 The book sounds really interesting – I’m always fascinated by those people in Tudor history who aren’t as widely written about and Henry VII is one of them. I’d love to learn more about how he won his crown and whether he was deserving of the unpopular opinion of him, and hopefully at the same time find out more about Elizabeth of York and Prince Arthur.
I would love to win a copy of this book because I’m studying Henry VIII with Oxford University and I’m sure this book about his father would really help to add to my knowledge of the period. Plus I’m sure it will be a cracking good read!
I’m doing my MA dissertation on comptemporary Tudor fiction and I need all the help and resources I can get. It will also help me with my next project, MA History!! eeek.
Just built some new bookshelves to accomodate my ever growing Tudor collection and this book would look great on it!
The Tudor/Elizabethan periods are inspiration for much of my art and beadwork. These periods are my favourite, and I’m always ready to pounce on any information relating to them. I would love to win a copy of this book – even the cover looks inspirational!
I’d love to read this book, its set in one of my favourite eras. It would be lovely to hear that I’d won a copy of The Winter King.
I am very interested in the founder of the Tudor dynasty. I know he is a vastly different ruler than his son was and I have never read a book about him. I would love to read this book.
To finally have a book on the father of Tudor dynasty is wonderful! This is such a pivitol period in history that has long been ignored. Thanks for the opportunity!
