‘Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England’ Grand Giveaway!

We are giving away five autographed copies of Thomas Penn’s Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England to celebrate the release of the paperback on March 1, 2012.

Here is a little something to whet your appetite:

It is 1501. Henry VII – a fugitive with Machiavellian charm – has won the throne of
England through luck, guile and ruthlessness. But for many he remains a usurper.
Now, his elder son is to marry a great Spanish princess in a wedding upon which the
fate of the country will hang…

Winter King vividly recreates the dark and dangerous birth of the Tudor dynasty, as
England was ravaged by fear, conspiracies, corruption and treachery, and one man
clung to his kingdom at any cost.

‘Compelling….fascinating’ Hilary Mantel

  19. I would love to win this book. I’m such a fan of Tudor History and would love to know more about the birth of the Tudor Dynasty.

  20. I love the cover of the book by Thomas King called, “Winter King”. I am a Tudor scholar and read everything about the Tudor period.
The most exciting thing about winning a copy of the book would be to have the signature of the author, Thomas Penn.
I wish him all the best and success with his wonderful new book.
    Patricia

  21. I would absolutely LOVE to receive a copy of this book. I have been in love with all things to do with the Tudors since my mom introduced me to her collection. Thanks so much for the chance to win! I cannot wait to one day visit “Tudor England” but for now maybe this book could shed a little light on the past! 🙂

  22. I would love to have at least the chance to win this book. My goal for the past 10 years was to visit the grave of our departed sister, Princess Diana. However now that I am so enamoured with English history my horizons have broadened to include not only to pay my respects to a fine lady, but to pay my respects to Anne Boleyn, Catherine of Aragon, Elizabeth I and many, many others. I feel it is my mission in my life to go back to my roots (my Great Grandma came from the UK) I still cannot believe that my ancestor ( and I can prove it) was Edmund Mody who saved Henry the 8th from drowning.
    Sincerely, Karen

  23. Deanna Burt says:

I would absolutely LOVE to own this book! I am obsessed with anything to do with the Tudors, especially Anne! 🙂 And have been that way every since my mom introduced me to her Tudor collection! Although I do not really know alot about Henry VIII’s father and would love to see what Thomas Peen has to say about him! Thanks for the chance to win! 🙂

  26. Roxanne says:

I would love to win this book. I have been fascinated with the Tudors since I was young. I have read many on Henry VIII and his wives, but am trying to branch out and read about each individual to try to understand what influences shaped them.

  27. Eileen Hasek says:

I have a number of books about Tudor England. I keep those books and reread them. I find that era in English History very interesting. Whenever I want something to read & I don’t know what I want I take a book from Tudor England. I like all books about historical England.

  28. Norma Vieweg says:

I would love to win and read this book. I have a love for British and Scottish history pre 1603. I also have many friends who would like to rad this book and I’ll definately pass the word on to them about this book. Thank You for this wonderful site.

  29. Stephanie Howsare says:

I have always been a history buff, and since my childhood my interests have moved from one time period to the next depending on my whims at the time. For the longest time it was the American Civil War and I even became a Reenactor. But since I began to watch the Tudors on television, I found my interest growing in learning more about that family and the times. I have begun intense research on the era and starting with the Plantagenets, I began a “Family tree” of sorts, tracing the roots of the dynasty. I have been thoroughly enjoying myself and have learned SO much. The people are fascinating the upheavals and changing of the mores and religious life of the times makes it even more engrossing. I have thus far done most of my research from books I borrowed at my local library, but would love to actually own a book that I could use in my research. Having a book that covers the time before Henry VIII would really appeal to me because while I love the tale of his life, the roots of the Tudor dynasty is where my true interest lies.

  30. Nadine Wiseman says:

Henry VII has always been, for me, a dark presence in the background of the lives of his fascinating and, frankly, more glamorous descendants. I have put off reading about him, absorbing only passing observations from books about the early life of Henry VIII, and the impression I gained of him was always of a mean, dour, unprepossessing man, albeit by reputation a brilliant administrator. Recently I re-read Derek Wilson’s “In The Lion’s Court”, and this time I was arrested by his comment that Henry VIII wasn’t anywhere near the king his father was. I hadn’t really absorbed that comment the first time round but now I really gave it (and my ignorance) some thought. Who was brave and resourceful enough, after years of exile and a claim to the throne which was fragile and dodgy at best, to invade a country, fight – and win – a battle against a reigning monarch, who, controversy aside, was no slouch in the kingly stakes himself? Which distant Lancaster cousin made the outrageous and controversial decision to marry a princess of the House of York, pull it off, and actually impose peace onto a country that had been tearing itself to pieces for over a hundred years? Who brought to heel the squabbling, arguing, power-mad barons who had always had things their own way? And who left Henry VIII with coffers so overflowing with gold that said young man was able to establish himself as the magnificent, munificent, glittering glamour boy of Europe, all on Daddy’s money. I apologise for my former ignorance and prejudice. I need to know about this incredible man.

    • Nadine Wiseman says:

Having made that remark about “Daddy’s money” it then occurred to me that you could equally claim that Henry VII’s resolve was considerably stiffened by Mummy’s iron-hard backbone!

  31. Carol LaForet says:

A king who ruled for over 20 years, and yet who was skipped by Shakespeare? I want to know more about him, please.

  32. Laura Hill says:

I think I deserve to win because I am intrigued by Tudor History.
I love the Tudor era so much that I want to become a professor that teaches tudor history.
If I could I would spend every waking minute researching all there is to know about Tudor history.
I deserve to win because there isn’t a person in this world that loves tudor history more than I.
Since learning of Anne Boleyn I have not ceased of thinking of her.
This book would be a great addition to my collection of Tudor history books and that is why I think I should win.
Somedays I feel like I was meant to live in a different era. I should of been born in the times of Henry and Anne.
    Thank you for this opportunity.

  33. Kay Zazueta-Castillo Gallegos says:

Eight months ago an injury left me unable to walk and I was forced to leave my military job and life behind. These past months have been trying both mentally and physically, the doctors were unable to properly diagnose me and my future became very uncertain. The one thing that brought me happiness and basically kept me sane was my love for Tudor History. I have been a fan for many years now but, my unfortunate circumstances have really strengthened my passion and my love for Tudor History. I haven’t been able to do much other than read and I have taken advantage of the time by getting any Tudor related book I could get my hands on. It has really been a positive force in my life and I can’t imagine going a day without reading or at least thinking about the Tudor era. Even my family recognizes my great love, they have also become fans because I talk to them about the Tudors so much! Since I lost my job, I haven’t been able to afford many books, especially the new releases. I would be extremely happy and grateful to win Penn’s book, it would bring much joy and keep me well entertained for awhile.

  34. Amy Long says:

Would love to read this! Am an absolute fan of history! Even if I don’t win, can’t wait to get this in my hands to read!!

  35. I would love to read this book and find out what were the motives behind this man and what made him take the gamble that he did to win the throne of England. It is a miracle that he won really. Not many rebellions in history are that successful. I have read a lot about his more flamboyant son but it’s time there was a story that really talks about the man behind the first Tudor reign,

  36. Angela S. Adams says:

Tudor historical fiction, who wouldn’t want this book!!! Even if I don’t win it, I’m sure I’ll end up purchasing it to read soon! Tudor era is by far my most favorite era in history 🙂

  37. Paula Edwards says:

Holy Hell! It’s Tudor Time, all day, every day, and twice on Sunday! who WOULDN’T WANT TO WIN this novel??? Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! (I’ll be forever grateful, and will name my next pet after you!) Please? Pretty Please? (I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand to see a grown woman beg…ok PLEASE~!!!!!)

  38. Sandie Reed says:

I would love to read the book by Thomas Penn, the “Winter’s King: The Dawn of Tudor England.” I think to read and discover more about the Tudors is imperative, so we can have a better understanding of why Henry VIII was the way he was. Something had to have happen in his childhood to produce such a man. It sounds like a fascinating book and a good read. Thank you! Sandie Reed

  39. Adrienne Dillard says:

I am sure I don’t deserve this any more than anyone else on here, but I would be so very excited to win. I feel as though there are too few books on the founder of the dynasty. He may have been a bit miserly, but history can’t deny that it obviously was a good way to be considering the inheritance he left his second son. I admire H7 greatly because he beat all the odds to claim his throne and whether you consider him a usurper or not, one has to admit to the outrageous bravery and gall he had to take his throne no matter what. I truly wish we had more leaders like him and I am thrilled he is getting some recognition in the form of a biography.

  40. (oh bother my comment got eaten by the captcha code!! and now I can’t remember everything I wrote!! haha)
Along the lines of this: My interest in this era is just as strong as Henry VIII time… I have a huge fascination with Elizabeth of York and her mother Elizabeth Woodville and personally think that the determination of the women of the time have a lot more than we read about to do with the beginning of the Tudor line… I would be very keen to see how much of this is written into the book. Especially as there isn’t much on this period of time 🙂

  41. Virginia Allen says:

I have been reading about the Tudors and English history since I was a teenager with great fascination. I would love to add the “Winter’s King” to my collection. I have never won a contest and would be very excited to win! Thank you for the opportunity.

  42. Liz St Clair says:

I would love to win this book because Henry VII is often overshadowed by his son’s story and yet the bare bones I know of his life, that he won a crown in battle, united the factions of a civil war through marriage, built up England’s treasury show that this must have been a remarkable man. I would love to learn more about Henry the man rather than the negative press he has usually got which have meant he has been consigned to a mere footnote compared to his son and grand daughters. I would like to examine the root now that I have read about the branches and read about the roses as well as the thorns in this Tudor monarch’s character.

  43. Heather Gregory says:

I would really love to add this book to my Tudor / All things Medieval and Renaissance Library. I am an Avid reader of all things European History, including textbooks… but especially of my beloved Tudor Era. I’m so passionate about this time, that I’m going back to Graduate School to receive my Doctorate in it. Also, I can name every ruling King and Queen of England from the 8th century on. 😉 As you can see, only a minor obsession!

  44. Joanna Handy says:

As an open university student studying history I can’t wait to read this book. I have a real passion for the tudors and hope to start a masters degree specialising in the early tudor era next year. As a student (with health problems preventing me from working) I don’t have much spare time to indulge my passion for history and would absolutely love to win this book. It has been on my amazon wishlist for many months (pre-order) but I have simply no money to spare right now. Getting the opportunity to brush up on my early tudor knowledge would be wonderful and I am really looking forward getting Thomas Penn’s perspective on the era.

  45. Sharon Elizabeth says:

I am an Anthropology/Archaeology major with an emphasis on English History from 1066-1603. I’m always on the hunt for new material that is relevant to my studies and it seems that this book would not only be fascinating, but also extremely useful.

  46. Lucy Straw says:

My favourite course at University was Tudors. That was over 50 years ago, but I have never forgotten. I have always wanted to learn more about the first Tudor monarch, Henry VII and his court.

  47. looks very interesting, would be awesome to win !!!

  48. I would love to win a copy of this book! It’s been on my wishlist for ages now, I am a huge historical fiction fan and owner of Passages to the Past where I’ve blogged about and reviewed HF novels and NF books for over 3 years. The Tudors are my favorite family to read about.

Thank you for this awesome giveaway!

  49. I’ve been researching my family tree for awhile now and have found several branches that tie into the tudors, which only serves to whet my appetite for all things tudor! I’ve been reading anything I could get my hands on since I was a teenager if it dealt with that period of time. It’s immensely fascinating. And, as a side note, my husband is getting jealous of the time that I spend on them!

  50. Wow! Thank you so much for all the wonderful entries. The competition is now closed, winners will be selected and announced shortly – good luck! Natalie
