In Bed With the Tudors by Amy Licence

In Bed With the Tudors by Amy Licence

I have just published my interview with historian Amy Licence, author of In Bed With the Tudors: The sex lives of a dynasty from Elizabeth of York to Elizabeth I published by Amberley Publishing.

Synopsis:

First ever book on the sex lives of the Tudors. Comprehensive coverage of all the major Tudors: Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Prince Arthur, Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, Catherine Parr, Henry VIII’s various mistresses, Edward VI, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I. Learn what went on behind closed doors in the Tudor court. Illegitimate children, adulterous queens, impotent kings, and a whole dynasty resting on their shoulders. Sex and childbirth were quite literally a matter of life or death for the Tudors – Elizabeth of York died in childbirth, two of Henry VIII’s queens were beheaded for infidelity, and Elizabeth I’s elective virginity signaled the demise of a dynasty. Amy Licence guides the reader through the births of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York’s two sons, Arthur and Henry, Catherine of Aragon’s subsequent marriages to both of these men, Henry VIII’s other five wives and his mistresses, and the sex lives of his daughters. This book details the experiences of all these women, from fertility, conception and pregnancy through to the delivery chamber, on to maternal and infant mortality. Each woman’s story is a blend of specific personal circumstances, set against their historical moment: for some the joys were brief, for others it was a question that ultimately determined their fates.

  3. This book looks SO interesting! From the moment I heard about it I’ve been itching to get my hands on it! I think learning about historical figures’ personal lives is just as much, if not more interesting than learning about their politics and reasons that they’re notable! The Tudors, especially, are known for their promiscuity and scandal, so I can imagine this is a VERY fun and interesting read.

  4. I am so excited about this book. This time last year I was beginning my undergrad senior thesis on Henry VIII and was reading every book I could get my hands on. I thought I knew everything before starting, but once I began my research I found an entire realm of things I had never imagined. The chance to read another book filled with knowledge of the Tudor times makes me so happy!

    • Indeed yesterdays history is full of mystery. Only recently, we have been able to unearth so many secrets of the past that not only opens our minds to what is and what is not, but also liberates the “ghosts” of the past–giving them justice–those that has been good and true. The truth will set us free!

Exciting to see what promises this book has to offer!

  5. Looking forward to reading this book. Can’t wait to add it to my Tudor collection.

  6. Jessie Riddle says:

I agree with Stephanie. I find the personal lives of historical figures just as fascinating as the history around them, their families, etc. I haven’t seen much on the topic..and when I originally saw that this book was being published, I knew I had to have it for my collection! I would love a shot at winning the book!
