Interview with Lyn Andrews

The Queen’s Promise by Lyn Andrews

Welcome to On the Tudor Trail Lyn! Could you share with us a little about yourself and your background?

Hi, I’m 69 years young!!! Married for 45 years to Bob, a now retired policeman and we have triplets, 2 sons and a daughter, now all married and we have 4 beautiful grandchildren. I have been writing for over 30 years. I started with Historical novels and then progressed to Family Sagas of which I’ve written 32 so far – just started my next today. Hard work, I hate first chapters!! They are set in Liverpool/Ireland/Isle of Man where we now live and I had a Sunday Times No.1 in 2010. I don’t come from a literary background, working class Liverpudlian. Mum was a hairdresser, Dad was a Policeman.  I always loved History, especially the Tudor period so that started me writing.

  1. That was very interesting, thank you both. I was at Sterling Castle 3 years ago and was lucky enough to see work being done on the Sterling Tapesties, commissioned by the castle in 2001, and due to be finished in 2013. These are based on the real ones hanging a museum in New York, and are dated from the 1500’s. There are 7 in the set, 4 being woven at Sterling, and depict The Hunt of the Unicorn. Each one is being done by hand using the techniques used in the 1400’s. The work is painstaking and intricate, and you were not allowed to speak to the tapestry workers while at work, as they need such high levels of consentration. The overall construction of these tapestries is very complex, from handling the fragile originals one so they could get all the details needed, copying the designs, to colour matching, it is so very, very interesting. A special studio is set up in the Nether Bailey, and there is a lot of information at hand to help the ‘bystander’ to learn all about this process. The colours are so vibrant, and I will definately journey down to view them when finished, hanging together in all their glory. There is plenty of info on the net if anyone is interested.
I wonder if they were still working on them when Ms. Andrews visited, as they must be near completion now.

  2. Thank you for a really interesting post. The Queens Promise looks wonderful, and i shall be adding it to my to-read list! Thank you x
