Book Description

The Elizabethan golden age was peopled by a court of flamboyant and devoted men – each one unique, ambitious and talented. At its centre was a woman, Elizabeth, the Tudor princess who succeeded to the throne of England in 1558 and who vowed to her Parliament to remain unwed and a Virgin Queen for the rest of her life. How did such a diverse group of red-blooded men view their ‘Gloriana?’ What were their aims and intentions? What were their dreams? And just how did Elizabeth manage to control and manipulate them? A unique blend of fact and fiction brings the Elizabethan court and its inhabitants to life in an evocative series of biographical sketches that will inform and entertain in equal measure.

  14. Sarah Longfield says:

This looks like an interesting take on the usual books about Elizabeth.

  15. Elizabeth was so fascinating! She managed all of the men in the kingdom and beyond. In a time when men weren’t used to being ruled by women, she was able to lead a successful kingdom and even an army. This book would be a great read. 🙂

  16. I do hope that at least one of the men who professed to love her actually did. Most loved her position as Queen and the power she wielded. Had those factors never existed, she was a pretty girl and young woman. She may have made a good marriage that increased her social status to some degree. If Elizabeth were born into poverty as many were, her education would have been nonexistant. There would have been no fine clothes, castles, jewels, nor castles. Ever-not even in her dreams. She’d have gone to work at a very, very early age, become very old looking by her late 20s. She would have most likely died an early death due to manual labor, poor diet, and rampant infectious diseases. The chances of medical intervention available to her would have been practically non-existant. I would love to read about even one man who loved Elizabeth the woman, and would have stayed if she lost it all in spite of this.

  17. Elizabeth I is my favorite historical figure. I am always keen on learning more about the people she was close to.

  18. Such an interesting person. I would love to learn more about her.

  19. I absolutely love to read books about Queen Elizabeth I. Look forward to this one.

  20. Kristen Jones says:

Elizabeth was one smart cookie. She knew that if she married she stood to lose her kingdom due to politics and what was considered “right” for a woman at the time. By keeping all these men guessing and at her fingertips, she controlled the situation, her destiny, and, inevitably, retained sole control of her crown. Would love to read this book.

I have a healthy obsession with Queen Elizabeth I. She is my favorite UK monarch. My life has all most paralleled hers: my father died at 55 on January 29, I was 14 years old, & had a sketchy upbringing after that. I adore her & look up to Queen Elizabeth I so much!
