How to Draw Anne Boleyn’s Falcon Badge by Kathryn Holeman

Welcome to my second Tudor drawing tutorial for ‘All Things Boleyn.’ It was such a treat to see your Anne Boleyn portraits last month! Today’s demonstration features Anne’s famous falcon badge. You can read more about the symbolism and history of her falcon badge here. The original version is fairly detailed but I’ve broken the steps into simple strokes that you can follow or use as a framework for a more detailed drawing. You will see that I’ve drawn this two ways: one in black marker for the step-by-step process PDF (link below) and, for the video, one in pencil finished with pen and watercolour. In tutorials, I like using black marker to help clarify the line work, but I personally love starting any drawing as a sketch with my pencil and eraser.

If you’d like to skip ahead to a finished drawing to colour, you can also find Anne Boleyn’s falcon badge in Colouring History: The Tudors, which is available on Amazon and the Bookdepository.com (with free worldwide shipping).

Happy drawing and happy colouring! ~ Kathryn

My tools of choice:

Fine tip permanent marker

or Pencil, eraser and pen (I use Staedtler Mars Lumograph 2B pencils, Staedtler Mars Lumograph plastic erasers, and Staedtler black pigment liner pens)

Blank sheet of paper, preferably a “mixed media” or heavy sketch paper
